Although we may not all be born with the use of our five physical senses, we are all born with the natural ability to use our five non-physical senses or what is commonly know as our Sixth sense. In fact we use them openly until somewhere between the ages of 2 and 5. It is about this time that we start listening to some well-meaning adult who informs us that we are making it all up. That the things we see are only in our imagination or worse that we are making up stories or lying, so we shut that ability down. Dr. Gratis of Grovetown, GA., states if you want to know what is wrong with your animal or what your animal is thinking, ask your 3-yr old. Dr. Gratis was way before his time and now at 90+ years he still has an active practice, and was the very first homeopathic vet in the Augusta area.
Often these abilities are lumped together and called our “sixth sense” or extrasensory perception. People who have extrasensory perception are said to be psychic. It is commonly called ESP, a term coined by J.B. Rhine, who began investigating the phenomenon at Duke University in 1927. ESP refers to telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and in recent years, remote viewing and clairaudience. The existence of ESP and other paranormal powers such as telekinesis are disputed, though systematic experimental research on these subjects, known collectively as psi, has been ongoing for over a century in parapsychology.
Clairaudience—the ability to “hear” (clear hearing) voices, music and other sounds that do not have a physical source. Actually, it is the ability to “hear” vibrations that are outside the range of the human physical ears. Clairaudient messages generally come in the form of thoughts that can be very hard to distinguish from our own inner thought process. Although, some clairaudients are able to literally hear voices of those on the "other side" (deceased people), our guardian angels or spirit guides, our higher selves, or God/dess. This can also include hearing voices/music/sounds that are actually echoes of the past - this happens a lot in older buildings and haunted areas (residual haunting). The psychic reception areas for this sense are on each side of the head, just above the ears.
The word Clairaudience literally means “Clear Hearing”. Such as hearing a human or non-human animal, fish, fowl, or reptile’s thought within your own mind, but not coming from your mind. Often we are awakened from a deep sleep hearing someone call our name, but no one is there (physically anyway). Some people (such as great artists) hear music and they just copy it down. It is directly connected to the throat/ears chakra.
Personally, I can only remember twice that I have actually “heard” voices outside of my head and in both instances, the voice came from behind me on the right. The first time was many years ago when my daughter was 15 and we were going through some great difficulties with her. It was during that time I decided that 15 was not an age but a disease and I was not sure whether we going to live through it. I was on the board of directors at the Tulsa Unity Church of Christianity and we were in the process of interviewing for a new minister. The church is shaped like a Hopi Hogan or not quite 1/2 of a wagon wheel. The only section of the sanctuary that does not have an overflow section behind it, is on the far right hand side. I was sitting on the very back row, so there was nothing behind me but an aisle and a wall.
Now this was not a good time in my life and I am sure that my mind was wandering, although I was trying very hard to pay attention to this man who might become our new minister. The visiting minister was speaking about Peter and Jesus and how as long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus he could walk on the water, but as soon as he took his eyes off Jesus he began to sink. At that exact moment I heard someone say out loud “It is hard to walk on water when you are up to your ass in waves”. I laughed out loud and turned to see who was behind me, only to realize that there was no one in physical body there and I was the only one that had heard the statement. In fact, people were looking at me to see what I thought was so funny.
That statement became my mantra and no matter what was going on in my life since that day, I can usually see the humor in it by remembering that statement, and thus managing to keep my perspective on any given situation.
The other time was after I had moved to SC and my son and I were traveling between Aiken and Columbia on a little two lane road. It was drizzling rain and I was driving about 50 miles per hour, when a man in a little white truck ran a stop sign and drove out directly in front of me doing around 35 mph. I hit the horn thinking he would speed up before I hit him, and instead he hit the breaks. Now I was driving an oversized high top van and could not stop it on a dime in perfectly dry weather, much less wet black top. I slammed on the breaks and the van spun around 180 degrees, hit the edge of the road and did a 90 degree turn back the other way. I could feel the van going up on two wheels, but I did not dare hit the breaks again or I knew we would flip over. It was just at that moment that I heard, clear as a bell, a voice yell from the back on the van, “Breaks”. I hit the breaks and as we slid off the road onto the grassy shoulder, it was like a giant hand steadied the shaking van and it settled down with two wheels on the pavement and two on the muddy shoulder. We were both very shaken up but alive, safe and the van was in tack. Both my son and I had heard the voice and knew that if I had not hit the breaks at exactly the right time, we would have turned over into the ditch. After getting out and checking the van, determining it was in perfect condition we continued out trip. Although I tried to catch up to the white pickup, the man and the white truck were no where to be found, which was probably a good thing as upset as I was.
Clairsentience—the ability to “feel” (tactile), or sense what another being is feeling. Literally means “Clear Feeling” and refers to the ability to intuitively feel the emotions or physical feelings of another. Clairsentience is the ability to “feel” energy and non-physical matter. Empathy and clairsentience are strongly related. Some say clairsentience is an advanced form of empathy, but most empaths have trouble releasing what they sense, where a good clairsentient can “plug in” and feel from inside another’s body, while being able to “pull the plug” and totally release those energies. The ability to feel within your own body what another feels within his/her own body and is necessary if working as a medical intuitive. This sense is directly connected to the solar plexus chakra. Unlike stronger psychic faculties like clairvoyance or clairaudience, clairsentience is always turned on to a certain degree. It acts as the gut feeling telling you not to go home a certain way. You, not knowing the reason behind this feeling that is trying to drag you away from trouble, ignore your feeling and go that route anyway, only to be caught behind an accident and delayed for hours, or worse, end up being in the accident.
Something that we all have probably experienced is gut feelings. Gut feelings have an emotional impression and follows physical sensations commonly felt in the solar plexus area. These types of feelings are clairsentience working in its latent stages. These gut feelings will draw your attention to something and then you will be overwhelmed with a strong physical sensation that will drive or compel you either towards the object or away from it.
Claircognizance (clear-knowing) - having knowledge of certain situations/people/places without having any information to facilitate such knowing. This can be things of the past, present or future (premonitions). A common statement from people who are strong in this ability is, "I don't know how I know, I just know that I know." The psychic reception area for this sense is located on the top of the head (the Crown chakra).
Clairvoyance—the ability to “see” beyond the physical. Literally means “clear seeing”. Either seeing pictures or movies within your own mind’s eye, or finding yourself inside of another and seeing what they see. This sense is connected to the “third eye” chakra. If you were to locate the center of your head from the front to back and then from the side to side, you would find two small organs called the pituitary body and the pineal gland. Medical science knows very little about them, and calls the pineal gland "the atrophied third eye," yet neither it nor the pituitary body is atrophying. This is very perplexing to scientists for Nature retains nothing useless. All over the body we find organs which are either atrophying or developing. The pituitary body and the pineal gland belong to still another class of organs, however, which at the present time are neither evolving nor degenerating, but are dormant. In order to regain contact with the inner worlds, it is necessary to establish the connection of the pineal gland and the pituitary body with the cerebrospinal nervous system, and to reawaken the pituitary body and the pineal gland.
The result of this polarity consciousness has us thinking that we're inside a body looking out, somehow separated from what's out there. Mankind is evolving to a frequency where clairvoyance will be part of daily life. For many people this sense comes naturally - especially with children. All children are clairvoyant, at least during the first year of life. How long the child will keep its faculty depends upon its spirituality and also upon its environment, because most children communicate all they see, hear or perceive, to their elders and the faculty of clairvoyance is affected by the elder’s attitude. Often children are ridiculed for telling of things that, their elders believe, can only be the result of "imagination," and they soon learn to shut out scenes which bring provoke such ridicule, or at least learn to keep these things to themselves.
For simplicity’s sake, I’ll call the two main forms of clairvoyant sight ‘physical’ and ‘non-physical’. Physical sight should not be confused with seeing something that is physically there, but rather having it appearing in usual surroundings, no matter how out of place it may be. A perfect if extreme example of this would be what the little boy saw in the movie, "The Sixth Sense" (which, incidentally, had a great deal of truth in it, despite Hollywood’s influence) who “saw dead people”. In this movie, the boy randomly saw the spirits of dead people appearing as solid as you or I. This is perhaps the most extravagant case of clairvoyance, and on the whole it is not so defined. Have you ever been convinced you have seen movement from the corner of your eye, then to have found nothing when you turn to face it? Most likely, you will have dismissed such happenings as imagination or nerves. Well, perhaps next time you should rethink that, given that the rods (outer sides) of our eyes are much more sensitive than the cones (center). We use just our cones whenever we look directly at something. We also have a very bad habit of turning our heads to see, rather than using our peripheral vision. The use of eyeglasses and the tunnel vision syndrome result, as well as the extended use of the cones in close work such as computers, has damaged them and made them less likely to pick up the finer details. The rods, on the other hand, are in much better condition, and will in essence, see more. A simple experiment to test the authenticity of this is to look up at the night sky. The stars will always appear brighter and sharper when we are not looking at them directly. Animals have more rods than cones where we have more cones than rods.
The second form, the non-physical, is in my experience the most common. Often experienced as a picture in your mind’s eye, or as an image projected on the back of your eyelids (when your eyes are closed), it’s much harder to pin down, and therefore is often discounted as imagination by beginning clairvoyants. It is, however, every bit as valid as seeing things physically and in fact can often be more useful to an experienced clairvoyant as it’s usually accompanied by clairsentience. It takes a while to hone and trust this form, but for goodness sakes don’t discount it. This is generally the way in which you will “see” what an animal sees.
One day, when my son was about 8 years, I walked into the room as he was moving his hands up and down—first one then the other, with the palms facing upwards. When I asked him what he was doing, he said “Look Mom, it’s a rainbow slinky, isn’t it great?” He was literally seeing and playing the energies moving between his two hands. When he was in high school, I worked at the University of Tulsa and he would often come in and help the computer students with their problems. They would bring him a print out of their program which he would read and then stare off into space. When asked what he was doing, He would suddenly stop and draw a circle around a certain spot on their paper. He would suddenly stop and draw a circle indicating where the program had formed a “loop” and why their program was not running properly. I have no idea how he did this, but he was always correct.
Clairalience (clear-smelling) - smelling things that have no physical source. This is the ability to smell non-physical matter, energy or spirit presence through the sense of smell. Although this ability surfaces less often, some people get very clear smells and the knowledge that goes with it. This is very common in haunted areas, but can also be an indication that a deceased loved one with us (i.e. smells your mother's favorite flower suddenly while in a closed room during winter). It can be their way of contacting us, letting us know they're around. You may also find that you will smell what the animal smells while you are in contact with said animal.
Clairhambience (clear-tasting) - tasting things without having eaten them. Is often found in collation of Clairalience, such as how an animal’s food taste. I have this happen often when I am scanning an animal physically. If I get a strong metallic taste, than I know the animal is toxic.
One thing that I cannot stress enough with any psychic ability, we often get the "bad" along with the good. When we develop our psychic senses, we are open to receiving all kinds of information, and this can include premonitions of upcoming events. This can be difficult, especially when we sense a loved one's impending death or illness. Sometimes we can do something about these events, and sometimes we cannot. I wish I could offer more helpful advice about this, but all I can say is, "use your best judgment". I don't advise going around spouting off to people that they're going to die, even if that's what you're sensing. This will only frighten them and make them think you've lost your mind. Psychic ability is a big responsibility, and we have to use it as such.
Year ago in Tulsa, I taught a class entitled Intuitive Development and one of the weekly exercises was to start each morning allowing your higher consciousness to show you a preview of the day. If they perceived anything, they were to write it down and then compare their notes that evening. One week a man came in saying, “Boy that stuff really works”. I asked if he would like to share what had happened and he told the following story. “Well I started my day just like you said, and I got this picture of the wheel coming off my truck, rolling down a hill and going through a plate glass window. And sure enough, about two hours later, just as I parked my truck downtown, I saw that wheel go past my truck and right through that window!” When I asked if he had used the premonition and checked his truck’s lug nuts or wheels, he responded, ”Hell, no, I wanted to see if it would really happen!”
After some discussion as to the purpose of the exercise, someone else asked how we knew that he had foreseen what was going to happen rather than his mind making it happen. We could debate this all day, but I can only say, that I personally know of no person whose concentration on the sub-conscious level is that strong. I have heard of Yogi’s that can do this, but only after years of intense practice. I am not saying that we do now make things happen in our lives all day long, every day. What I am saying, is it takes a tremendous amount of concentrated energy to MAKE something like a wheel come off. (If you are interested in this ability, I would suggest you read Machaelle Small Wright’s “Behaving as if the God in All Life Mattered”
When my son was in high school, he drove an old pickup truck. One day we had used it to go pick up the big wheel lawnmower from the shop. When my husband placed it in the back of the truck he put it with the handle aimed at the back window and jammed a screwdriver under one of the tires. I had a really bad feeling and suggested that he turn the mower so it sat across the bed rather than longwise. He laughed at me and said since the rear tires had such large grooves, it would be fine. We had not gone a block when he had to hit the breaks, the lawnmower lurched and then slowly rolled to the back of the truck and then forward striking the rear window. By this time the feeling was overwhelming and I again commented that he should stop and turn the mower. For the second time he laughed calling me a worry wart and drove on. A block later as he pulled away from a stop sign, the mower rolled to the rear of the truck, he was slowing down to turn a corner, when the handle of the mower came right through the window and hit us in the head with glass going everywhere.
Of course, I had to say I had told him so and his response was “You made it happen, just so you could be right”. Now I am here to tell you, I WISH I had that kind of power, but no matter how hard I have tried, I have never managed that kind of feat.
The biggest problem that I find with anyone trying communication for the first time is shutting down our minds (and mouths) so that we might learn to listen. One of the best ways to do this is pick a day – mark it on the calendar – this is your day of being quiet. That means you do not speak or make any verbal noise all day. You do not have to spend the day in meditation, but be in a day of appreciation of your body and the wonders of its working. Appreciate this universe, our planet and all the beings that reside here, the animals, fish and fowl, the plants, trees and the nature beings. Show respect by being in a day of quiet.
Back when the earth was first created, our creator gave all of the earth beings the ability to communicate one with another with no species barriers. The original natives communicated with the plant kingdom and learned which plants worked with their human bodies for particular ailments and thus the medicine person was created. They communicated with the elementals and the shaman was created. In those times man did not eat meat, but lived happily on the nuts, berries and the grains that the earth provided. Much later when the earth suffered climatic changes, mankind’s entire thought processes changed from interaction to survival and thus in that need to survive he must eat whatever was readily available and that included the meat provided by the animals. Of course the animals in an effort to survive also returned the favor by eating humans as well as other animals.
Somewhere in our distant past, humans lost the ability to communicate telepathically and started using a verbal language. I have often wondered since all languages seem to have the same core words, if this is what the story of the Tower of Babble represented, rather than the creation of many different verbal languages. Oh well, that discussion could be a whole newsletter by itself.
Anyway, with the eating of flesh the physical bodies began to vibrate at a lower rate and became much more solid. The wild animals seemed to become of one mind or a group consciousness. They still had their own individual thoughts, but they also knew what the group, especially the leader, was thinking at all times. But mankind moved from this knowing to depending upon their outward senses and thus lost the ability of this inner contact. The Aborigines are the only ones I know of who still maintain this ability today.
As animals become more domesticated, they seem to also become more individualized although they still have no problems communicating. I have always thought that it was most interesting how any two animals can have an open communication but remain enemies at the same time. There seems to be an unspoken rule stating that all animals may drink from the same water hole, but none may attack another during that time. It is a safe zone. There obviously is some kind of telepathic communication going on here.
The word communicate starts with the root word to 'commune' which means 'to talk together, usually intensely and animatedly; interchange thoughts or feelings’ and that is exactly what interspecies communication is. During this commune, the world becomes timeless, I have abundant energy, I never tire, and everything just flows with seemingly little or no conscious intervention. My heart Chakra is wide open; I am energized, not half asleep. Now I will admit that if I do more than 4 or 5 one hour session in one day, I tend to get pretty spacey. Doing shows with 15 minute appointments where I may converse with several animals during each appointment time, I can be physically exhausted after the show. But during the communications, I am alive and energized. I think it is the staying “between” the worlds that tends to make the body tired afterwards. This can be easily related to a subject participating in hypnosis. Often when you are not allowed to “float” off, but must stay present enough to converse with the hypnotist. During a communication session, you are in the between world when conversing with not only the animal, but the animal’s person.
This is how I encourage people to approach animal communication. It is vital to be alert and totally in the moment, able to respond immediately to whatever you feel, see or hear. Before your conscious mind starts analyzing and questioning and creating doubt. It is actually effortless and easy. "Okay, okay," I can hear many of you groaning and saying, "It is easy for you to say that." But it is TRUE. Trying too hard is a predominantly left-brain activity, along with analyzing, judging, categorizing and projecting - it is that well practiced and conditioned part of us that is often afraid of failure. What we want is a balance with right-brained openness and the trust that accompanies it. Work from your heart. If your radio is correctly tuned to a particular station, then the music or talk is there, as clear as a bell whether you choose to give it your attention or not. You can leave the room, answer the phone, hold a conversation, do some housework, etc. As long as your radio remains correctly tuned it will still be there, ready for you to listen to whenever you choose to listen or turn the switch on.
It is that easy. However, if you don't tune the radio in well, there may be crackling noises, breaks in the reception and interference, meaning you have to try really hard to hear the music or talk over the static. It is an effort and you would soon give up and change the channel. It isn't that the sounds being transmitted from the station are unclear; they are there to be heard, if you can just tune in properly. When it comes to telepathy with animals, you are the radio receiver. All you have to do is find out how to tune in clearly, and it is all there for you to listen to. Now imagine two people trying to talk at the same time on a CB radio. This radio not only receives, but transmits as well but NOT at the same time. If you both try to push the button and speak at the same time—neither will be heard clearly. But this describes the way many of us are all the time. We tune ourselves in to listen, and then our own internal chatter begins. What a racket! All those thoughts, feelings, doubts, queries, judgments and so on are read loud and clear by an animal, and they cannot get a word in edgewise, so they give up and change the channel or “tune us out”. It is not always possible to completely cease all our mind traffic, but it is important to find a way to let it just flow through, without becoming attached to it. Don't allow it to sidetrack you.
Emotional silence is the most important. If you flood an animal with an emotion, be it love, fear, anger, grief or sorrow, you are likely to receive back either your own emotions or your animal's response to it, which can be confusing to say the least. People who try to connect with their animal after it has passed to spirit often say to me "he/she seems so sad," and I will always encourage them to be clear whether that could be their own emotion they perceive, as so often it is. I have never found a soul, be it from an animal or human incarnation that is sad to be on the other side. They are pain free, whole, healthy and young. They are still very much in the present and still communicate with other animals in the household and are still in touch with us, even if we are not aware of their presence. You cannot become attached to the outcome of any said communication.
Picture your very best friend, the person you can be completely open and honest with, the person who really knows YOU. That special someone who is the very person you want to be with and talk to when something is troubling you. Now ask yourself, what qualities does that person have? What is there about them that allow you to be yourself and to express yourself openly and honestly? How is it that they are always able to help you clarify things in your own mind? How do they do that? Of course trust is greatly important, but even beyond that, why is it that you can speak so freely to this person? Is it because of their attentiveness? Because when you are telling them your troubles you know they are REALLY listening, not pre-judging, or assuming they know what you are going to say? Or worse they are just waiting for you to be quiet so they can talk. Maybe they can even read between the words? Not adding their own, but truly using all their senses to really listen to the thoughts and feelings, the pictures, even the body language that all go to make up a conversation (remember, less than 10% of communication is verbal!). They are open and receptive and have no emotional investment in what you have to say. Your message doesn't have to pass through a filter of preconception and preoccupation, it reaches them in its purest form and they LISTEN. If you can emulate all of those qualities when communicating to your animal friends, not only will you be able to understand, but they will want to communicate! Be a clear receiver.
I did belong to a group in Tulsa, where we would try to develop and strengthen our different physic abilities. We spent several weeks trying to move a feather or a balloon on a string, but that was with whole group energy, not just my own mind power, and the best we could do was a few inches.
Sometimes people who are too open psychically can find crowded places extremely painful and uncomfortable. This especially applies to people who are strong in clairsentience, but it pertains to the other senses as well. In these situations, sensitives often feel bombarded with psychic impressions, emotions, thoughts and a flood of information from the people around them and even from the building they are in. There are many methods of reducing this psychic "noise". This is one of the many reasons that I rarely go to fairs, craft shows, flea markets or other crowded places.
If you feel bombarded with unwanted information, focus on "closing" those areas to shut it out. . You could visualize a shield of protective energy covering them, blocking out unwanted impressions. You may not need to do this with ALL of the reception areas, especially if you're only strong in one or two psychic senses. If this applies to you, just focus on toning down those that you're strongest in.
You can also visualize a big "pouch" of energy, like a sleeping bag. It can be any color you wish, whatever is most soothing to you. I usually use white, but that's my preference. Visualize yourself stepping into this pouch of energy, and pulling it up and around you. Pull it all the way over your head so you are completely encased in its protective warmth. Then "zip" it up, just like a sleeping bag. You are now encased in a shield of energy.
